Tell Your Local Papers: We Need the Senate to Support Our Clean Energy Future

Sen. Murkowski's "Dirty Air Act" resolution -- which would've crippled our ability to use the Clean Air Act to crack down on America's biggest climate polluters -- was defeated in the Senate by a vote of 53-47. But it's horrifying that the Senate would even think of giving Big Oil and Dirty Coal a bailout while millions of gallons of oil are still gushing into the Gulf. Clearly, polluters have a stranglehold on our elected officials, and our leaders are stunningly out of touch when it comes to our energy and climate crisis.

Take this opportunity to tell your local newspaper's editors that America deserves a Senate that will defend the Clean Air Act and a clean energy economy. Tell your paper to commend senators for their vote against Murkowski and to call out those who voted for Big Oil and Dirty Coal.

On June 10th, the U.S. Senate voted down Sen. Lisa Murkowski's (R-AK) "Dirty Air Act" (Senate Joint Resolution 26) by a vote of 53-47. Had this resolution passed, it would have meant an additional $47 billion in profits for Big Oil, an additional 455 million barrels of oil that our already fossil fuel addicted nation would've used over the next six years, and the elimination of one of the Obama Adminstration’s key tools for cracking down on the oldest, dirtiest, and unhealthiest coal plants.

With millions of gallons of oil still pouring into the open ocean and coastlines throughout the Gulf of Mexico, it is outrageous that a resolution that would increase our dependence on fossil fuels would make it to the Senate floor.  Fortunately, this “Dirty Air Act” was defeated by 53 courageous senators. Every senator who voted to protect us from climate pollution and jump-start a clean energy economy by helping defeat this resolution deserves our thanks.

But those 47 senators who voted 'yes' should be ashamed of their votes. They will be long remembered as  politicians who put the interests of Big Oil and Dirty Coal above the interests of our families, our state, and our country. We need real solutions to our energy and climate crisis, not more bailouts for Big Oil and other dirty polluters.
