Tell Congress to Fund Green Jobs & Grants

Congress is now deciding which federal programs will be funded in 2009. Among those programs are the Green Jobs Act, which would invest $125 million in green-collar job training programs, and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, which would authorize grants to local communities to help improve their energy efficiency and increase renewable energy. Now we must make sure that Members of Congress keep their promise and fully fund these programs.

Fully Fund the Green Jobs Act and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant

I am writing to ask you to support full funding for the Green Jobs Act and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program in the 2009 Appropriations Bill.

As an important part of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, these programs will provide essential investments in green-collar job creation and training, and will help us build an inclusive green economy that will lift people out of poverty.

A fully funded Green Jobs Act will distribute $125 million per year to identify needed skills, create training programs, and train workers for jobs in a range of green industries.  While it targets many different populations for eligibility, it has a particular focus on creating “green pathways out of poverty.”

A fully funded Energy Efficiency and Conversation Block Grant Program will distribute $2 billion per year to cities and local governments for energy conservation, energy audits, fuel conservation programs, and the use of renewable energy. These “green” block grants could make tens of thousands of green-collar jobs accessible to low-income city residents who most need work and careers.

Communities across the country are taking the lead in creating green-collar jobs and ensuring that those who most need work are trained for the most critical jobs.  The Green Jobs Act and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program will help existing initiatives to grow and start new ones in more communities across the country.
