Congrats on Your Nobel Prize, Mr. President -- And Keep Leading on Climate!

President Barack Obama & Windmill Congratulations to President Obama on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! This honor is a testament to his leadership on climate so far -- and the promise of greater leadership to come.

The Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act from Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer is up for debate this fall, and we need President Obama’s leadership to help push for a strong bill that cracks down on Dirty Coal and sets strong targets to reduce CO2. We also need his leadership at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to ensure the world’s nations agree on a treaty that will finally confront the climate challenge.

Dear Mr. President,

Congratulations on your remarkable honor as the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize! President Obama, you have a historic opportunity to keep leading on climate change by strengthening the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act bill sponsored by Sens. John Kerry and Barbara Boxer, and by attending the U.N. Climate Conference in December and working to secure a strong and fair global climate agreement.

This Kerry-Boxer bill ensures that we have the ability to clean up old and dirty coal plants, put an end to the expansion of dirty coal technologies, create millions of clean energy jobs, and tackle our climate crisis before it’s too late.  But many Senators are already working to undermine it’s power and potential.

We urge you to support and defend key pieces of the Kerry-Boxer bill that:

* Stop Dirty Coal: Support and defend the elements of the bill that transition us away from dirty fossil fuels of the past and towards the clean energy of the future by keeping Clean Air Act provisions intact. The Clean Air Act is a key tool for ending the construction of new dirty coal plants that use outdated technology, and ensuring that the oldest, dirtiest coal plants must control their global warming pollution.

*Mandate Strong Cuts in Global Warming Pollution: Support and defend the provisions that require carbon cuts of at least 20% by 2020. We must not weaken this 20% target because scientists tell us we must do even more and because the Kerry -Boxer bill includes new exemptions for methane and industrial process emissions that mean we will lose 2.5% of what was achieved by strengthening 2020 targets from 17% to 20% in this bill.

*Create millions of clean energy jobs: The Kerry-Boxer bill lays the foundation for key job-creating and job-training programs necessary to jumpstart America's transition to a clean energy economy. Provisions in this bill ensure that new clean energy jobs will be accessible to the broadest range of American workers.

We need your leadership in the coming weeks to pass a bill that will address both our near term economic needs and the long-term health and prosperity of our nation. We also need your leadership at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to ensure the world’s nations agree on a treaty that will finally confront climate challenge, protect vulnerable populations threatened by global warming, and build the foundation of a prosperous clean energy future.
